Today, medical equipment technology is advancing at faster rapid speeds, in large part because of the advent of computer technology just a few decades ago. But despite this, some of the most common and essential pieces of medical machinery still in use today had their origin in pre-computer times. Here are 5 of the top medical machines used in hospitals.
Defibrillators remain the best tools for reviving patients during cardiac arrests. Defibrillators can be found in almost every hospital room today along with the first aid kit. Experiments with defibrillation started in the late 19th century, but it was not until 1947 that a defibrillator was first used to resuscitate a human being: a 14 year old patient of Doctor Claude Beck. Beck used his still-not-properly-tested defibrillator when the 14-year-old's heart stopped in the middle of open heart surgery.
One of the most essential tools in the operating room, the patient monitor is a large device that records and interprets the vital signs of a patient during medical care or treatment. Thanks to patient monitors, doctors and nurses are sometimes alerted of incoming changes or dangers to the patients state before symptoms of the changes become physically apparent.
It was German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen who accidentally discovered x-rays in 1895 while working on experiments with electron beams. It took many years to get x-rays machines from the large, cumbersome and fatally dangerous things they were at the beginning to the highly useful and very safe instruments they are today. X-ray machines help doctors diagnose illnesses, detect fractured bones, cavities and foreign objects inside the body.
The first EKG (electrocardiogram) machine was built in 1903 by Willem Einthoven. An EKG machine detects any abnormalities in heart functions by detecting the electrical signals created by the movement of the heart's muscles. Einthoven assigned the letters P, Q, R, S and T to the various kinds of electrical signals of the heart. His system is still used in modern EKG machines.
In a similar fashion as sonar, ultrasound machines map the body's interior tissue and organs by emitting high-pitched sound waves that bounce off internal body structures to produce a visual image of them. Karl Dussik and Ian Donald are the two most well known pioneers of ultrasound technology. In 192, Dussik used ultrasound to examine the human brain and Donald, in the 50s, used ultrasound for diagnostic purposes.
Healthcare maintenance is dependent on a CMMS (computerized maintenance management software) to meet the varieties of facilities that are responsive enough to adapt to the technological innovation. Some of the biggest hospitals greatly benefit from the CMMS programs in improving high standards for both the physical infrastructure and equipments. This software will help in the running of machines and facilities as well as increasing the life and reliability of management assets such as HVAC systems, lights, plumbing systems, restrooms, elevators and parking lots.
Another invaluable function of the CMMS software is that they capture a wealth of accurate data which provides a complete picture of the equipment performance and costs. With a large amount of data, managers can take decisions about reducing the costs involved in the energy use and machine maintenance. Supervisors can also keep a computerized record of the condition of expensive equipments such as MRI, X Ray machines, sterilized tools and other medical machines, hence they are always available for staff and patient care.
One more important function of the hospital CMMS programs is it helps to support overall healthcare, safety and security through asset tracking. Some of the important aspects such as air quality, elevator functionality, food storage equipment and machine performance can be monitored effectively using the CMMS software. It also helps to keep a track of the valuable medicines. Many types of medicines are classified as controlled substances due to their addictive nature, therefore it is important for the healthcare facility to be able to account for how much they have and where it is. Healthcare maintenance software programs help to determine where the controlled substances are stored, who accessed them and when they are administered.
Hospital management software can save much of the time of the health care workers in their day to day jobs. It also helps the doctors to manage their assignments and schedules, carry out patient registration, maintain the blood banks with available details of the blood types, individual records of patients with their test reports, nursing and housekeeping service details, preparing financial reports including billing, payments, insurance details and much more. The CMMS software can also reduce the delays and confusions that are caused by missing and incomplete records. In a word, it sets a standard for the patient's health care by providing information to the family members regarding their illness and conditions as well as the treatments available.
Since many conditions and medications are spelled, similarly the poor handwriting on the part of the doctor can cause major health problems and complications that can cause harm not only to the patients but also leaves the doctors and the hospitals liable. Since the hospital administration software are computerized, when a doctor enters a medication system, they can take the assistance of keyboards thus avoiding the harmful mistakes due to the handwriting errors. Indeed, all the aspects of hospital operation, including medical, administrative, legal and the corresponding service processing can be maintained with a greater degree of efficiency when healthcare software is used.

When you have a sick friend or relative that has to spend some time in hospital, you would do just about anything to make him or her feel better. And you are perfectly right to do so – when a person is happy and optimistic, he or she will recover much faster. If you buy a small item for a sick friend or relative who is in hospital, you need to make sure that the gift is funny, entertaining or … delicious. There are two categories of gifts you can get for people in hospital: edible or non-edible.
Hospital food is horrible – your sick friends or relatives in hospital will appreciate a delicious treat. Whether it's fruits, sweets or something else, you will make to the sick person a great surprise. However, you have to check first if your friend or relative is allowed to have such snacks or he or she has to follow a special diet. Before buying foods for sick people check with the family what type of foods you should get. You don't have to be the one who takes chocolate to a sick person and he or she can't eat it.
Spending entire days on a hospital bed is really boring for the sick person. A suitable gift for a friend or a relative who is in hospital would be something that makes time go faster: a book of his or her favorite author, some magazines, an MP3 or MP4 player to listen to the music. Comic books are also a great gift idea for sick persons having to spend time in hospital – superheroes adventures certainly help everyone to forget they have to stay in hospital for days. You can also buy some games that can be played by a single person, like Sudoku or crossword puzzle. Buying a laptop for a sick friend or relative might be a little too expensive, but you can lend them your laptop for the entire hospitalization period. Make sure you have a lot of computer games and movies on your laptop.
Flowers, balloons and cards are perfect to cheer a sick person in hospital. Such a gift will make the room prettier and friendlier. Your sick friend or relative will enjoy the beauty of the flowers and the encouraging "Get well soon" message from your card. Funny gifts are another option for the moments when you have to visit your sick friends or relatives in hospital. Think about something that it will make them laugh: a T-shirt with a funny message printed on, amusing stickers for the bandages or some comic toys.
If you have to visit a child who is in the hospital, you can make him or her really happy with the right toy, whether it's a doll, a car, Lego game or something else. To help a child to deal with that stressful situation, you can buy him or her a toy doctor play set. Surely the child will cooperate better with the doctors if he or she has a set of instruments that are just like the ones that doctors are using. And remember, the best gift you can make for your sick friends and relatives are moral support and attention.

If you're renting a hospital bed, make sure to follow within a set of tips and rules to make sure that you can get the best deal for it.
1) Make Sure Your Purchase is Covered by Your Policy
First, don't rent or buy from the first company you check out. Shop around, and try talking with your insurance company because they may have names of companies that are covered under an insurance plan. Not all companies are covered by Medicare or your insurance company, so make sure you find one that will get you a reimbursement.
Check with Medicare as well. Your bed might be covered. Medicare will cover the cost of a bed if you can show that you have sufficient medical necessity for it. If you're covered under Part B, consult with your doctor to get a prescription to have the bill of the bed covered.
2) Ask Your Doctor for Referrals
While getting the prescription from your doctor, ask if they have names of companies to rent from that they recommend. If they're writing you a prescription for a hospital bed, they may have a name or two of a good company to use. They have to deal with these things a lot, and they'll hear if a company is good or bad.
3) Remember to Cross All of Your Ts and Dot All of Your Is
Make sure to always follow the correct procedure and fill out all the necessary paperwork to get your bed covered by insurance or Medicare. It can be frustrating to go through the entire process of applying and getting the chair, only to find out that you've done something wrong that will disqualify you from getting reimbursed for your bed. It's better to call Medicare or your insurance company and make sure you're doing everything correctly before proceeding with each step. It's better to be safe, than sorry.
When can you sue the hospital or its employees for negligence?
A hospital can be sued for negligence for mistakes that harm or kill a patient. When an employee of the hospital is guilty of negligence, you can sue the hospital. When a doctor working for a hospital makes a mistake, both the doctor personally and the hospital as a whole can be sued. However, doctors can only be sued if they were present and could have prevented the negligence. You cannot sue every doctor in the Emergency Room or surgical floor, only the one who administered or oversaw your treatment. Hospitals can also be sued when a doctor with a history of negligence and medical mistakes was kept on the payroll, thus enabling them to continue harming patients.
What constitutes neglect?
Neglect occurs when someone does not do their job as a normal and competent professional would. Negligence includes not verifying instructions, not following checklists, failing to assist patients in need and not take immediate action in an emergency. There are greater tolerances for mistakes made in life threatening emergencies than general care situations. Malpractice and negligence can arise from a failure to properly diagnose a condition or injury. Negligence can occur when someone is given the improper treatment or the correct treatment is administered incorrectly. Nurses administering the wrong medication and therapists following the wrong protocols are examples of this.
Failing to risk patients of negative outcomes from a medical treatment or side effects of the treatment is also negligence. Recommending a surgery to cure cataracts that can also leave a patient blind is an example of this concept. To sue for negligence, the risk must be significant enough that the patient might have chosen not to have the procedure or treatment if they had known and must have suffered that negative outcome.
Can you sue medical professionals other than doctors at the hospital?
Yes. Any medical professional affiliated with a hospital can be sued for negligence. This includes nurses, physical therapists, medical technicians and pharmacists. First responders such as paramedics and firefighters have broad protection from medical negligence claims, due to the difficulty of acting during emergencies, unless they are employees of the hospital and provide care at the facility. Good Samaritans are rarely sued for negligence unless their actions are reckless.
What types of damages are available when someone sues a hospital for negligence?
There must be a specific injury as well as actual damage to sue for negligence. You cannot sue a hospital because you were unhappy with the level of service.
- Physical pain and suffering
- Medical bills with other medical facilities or practitioners to treat the condition caused by the hospital's neglect, injuries caused by the hospital or diagnose what the hospital failed to find.
- Lost income due to the inability to work or lost income of the individual who died
- Medical bills resulting from additional treatment at the hospital if the patient had received the proper course of treatment.
- Costs of physical therapy or assisted care while recovering

In an emergency, your life depends on getting to the nearest hospital. But when you have an option to plan ahead, selecting the right hospital for your treatment makes all the difference. It not only gives you the confidence that you are in good hands, but also makes your stay at the hospital worth it. The best hospitals have the best of everything. They have the right doctors on board, the best support staff, the best in class medical equipment and infrastructure. If you are selecting a hospital for your treatment, here are a few tips on how to select the best hospital:
Check out hospital ratings
Ratings are a good place to start your research. Well, even if there aren't too many hospitals in your area to compare, ratings give you a fair idea about the services you can expect to receive. Hospitals are generally rated using the following factors:
Patient experiences – patient experiences with the doctor, the support staff and other hospital members does matter. Patient's opinion about the cleanliness of the hospital and its maintenance also affects hospital ratings.
Patient outcomes – patient outcomes are an important factor in rating hospitals. The number of times a patient had to be re-admitted for the same ailment etc. makes a difference in hospital ratings.
· Hospital practices and Safety scores play a major role in influencing the rating of a hospital.
So, ratings are not just some random numbers, they could be of great help when you wish to select a hospital for your treatment.
Talk to previous patients
It is a good idea to get feedback from patients regarding the hospital. They will be able to give you accurate information of how the rooms were kept and how friendly or unfriendly the nurses were and how expertly the doctor completed the treatment. Talk to someone who has experienced it first hand and you will get a better idea of which hospital to select.
Check out doctor's profiles
In fact check this before you check anything else. It is important to check out the doctors onboard before you finalize a hospital. If you are looking for a heart surgery, check out the heart surgeons working at that hospital either fulltime or on a per visit basis. It is a good idea to get acquainted with the doctors treating you.
Finally, decide whether you wish to select a specialty hospital or a multispecialty hospital. Specialty hospitals provide services for just one type of treatment such as 'Heart Hospital'. Multispecialty hospitals have the ability to treat a varied type of ailments.
Finally, make sure that you shortlist a few hospitals in your area and actually visit them. Talk to the staff and check out the rooms. You can also check out their websites or social media pages to get more information. The testimonials written by the patients are important too. Check them out before you decide! Take all the points into consideration and then select the best hospital for your treatment.
